Teaching Fellow in English
The Hotchkiss School seeks a Teaching Fellow in English for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 academic years as part of the University of Pennsylvania’s Boarding School Teaching Residency (BSTR) program.
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in English or a closely related field is required. Previous teaching, tutoring, or work experience in youth programs is desirable.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Teaching Fellow’s responsibilities include teaching three courses in English. In the first year of the fellowship, one of these classes is co-taught with a mentor teacher, and the Teaching Fellow works with other faculty to develop and refine curricula, assessments, and pedagogy at the departmental level. The applicant will be expected to participate in community life through service in our residential and co-curricular programs.
Penn Boarding School Residency Program:
Hotchkiss is a member of a consortium of schools that have partnered with the University of Pennsylvania to form the Boarding School Teaching Residency (BSTR) program. The BSTR program is a two-year program in which Teaching Fellows serve as faculty at member schools while completing coursework to earn an M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education.
Penn coursework runs concurrently during two academic years of teaching at Hotchkiss and involves an additional week of classes at Penn in each of two summers. During the school year, courses are conducted online by Penn Faculty, with regular gatherings of the entire cohort at the University of Pennsylvania and at member schools. Robust mentoring supports the Teaching Fellows in their coursework as well as with the regular duties of Teaching Fellows described above.
Hotchkiss will refer finalist candidates to the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education, which must also accept a candidate into the BSTR program before appointment as a Teaching Fellow at Hotchkiss.
Compensation:
Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience and education level, and includes year-round housing (plus utilities) and meals when school is in session. Hotchkiss covers 80% of the tuition costs of the BSTR program. Hotchkiss also provides a comprehensive benefits package, which includes a variety of health insurance offerings, dental, vision, life, and short- and long-term disability offerings, HSA/FSA options, and retirement benefits through TIAA-CREF. Ample funding exists to support participation in professional conferences, workshops, summer study, and travel, as well as advanced degree work.
