Atmospheric Modeling Postdoctoral Research Staff Member

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher. You will conduct cutting edge research in atmospheric modeling for a variety of applications, including microscale, and/or mesoscale modeling as well as fate and transport for the National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center (NARAC, see https://narac.llnl.gov) and for wind energy efforts. You will work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, technicians, and project managers to develop and apply new capabilities for emergency response and wind energy purposes. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED) within the Engineering Directorate.
Essential Duties
- Conduct creative research in the field of atmospheric modeling.
- Develop, validate and apply computer models of urban-scale and complex terrain, atmospheric transport, diffusion, deposition and effects of hazardous material.
- Analyze model and observational datasets relevant to the NARAC, and/or wind energy applications.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- PhD in mechanical, civil or environmental engineering, atmospheric science, computational science, or a closely related field.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: urban dispersion modeling, atmospheric science, turbulence and diffusion modeling, nuclear/radiological sources and effects, regional atmospheric flow, atmospheric boundary layer, computational fluid dynamics, large-eddy simulation, atmospheric chemistry, aerosol science, field data analysis.
- Experience with numerical methods and model development.
- Familiarity with programming languages including Fortran, Python, MATLAB or similar language.
- Experience with urban-scale simulation in one or more of the following areas: atmospheric transport and dispersion, aerosol science, or large-eddy simulation.
- Experience with large model and observational datasets, modern programming environments, and visualization techniques.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment, and travel as required to collaborate with researchers.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with uncertainty quantification, ensembles, statistical analysis, microphysics or atmospheric boundary layer turbulence, nuclear/radiological sources and effects.
- Familiarity with MPI/ OpenMP or GPU programming for supercomputing.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:  This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
