Job Description
Supervisory Social Worker

The Social Worker Supervisor position is located in the Readjustment Counseling Service Vet Center in Cedar Rapids IA. The following is a brief description of duties:

  • Responsible for the overall clinical and administrative operation of the Vet Center.
  • In coordination with the Regional Manager, defines the mission and scope of practice of the Center according to the policies of Readjustment Counseling Service and the needs of the local veteran community.
  • Supervises the staff of the Vet Center and is responsible for evaluating their performance.
  • Develops networks and working relationships external to the Vet Center and the Department of Veterans Affairs with veteran service organizations, community-based agencies, and mental health organizations to enhance service delivery and develop referrals of veteran clients appropriate care.
  • Develops priorities, based upon the direction of the Regional Manager, and makes independent professional decisions and recommendations with infrequent recourse to supervisory members of the Regional Manager's office.
  • Serves as a consultant and subject matter expert to programs and resources external to the Vet Center on matters of readjustment needs of veterans.
  • Provides direct service to Vet Center clients and family members.


Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm and one (1) off tour shift

Preferred Experience: Supervisory/Administrative experience as a Mental Health Worker in a Health Care Facility.



Grade Determinations:
Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.

Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185-12 series in VHA Must be a licensed or certified Social Worker by a state at the advanced practice level which included an Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) advanced generalist or clinical examination. This requirement would be met by possession of Iowa State LISW licensure or Illinois State LCSW licensure.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12.Physical Requirements: The work of this position is primarily sedentary. Physical demands do not exceed those of a typical office setting.
