The incumbent supervises ultrasound technologists while working with radiologists, clinicians and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, superior quality exam results, and patient satisfaction. The incumbent's primary responsibilities are in the performance of standard and specialized ultrasound examinations and interventional procedures in accordance with American College of Radiology practice standards for both inpatient and outpatient populations at Durham VAMC. The purpose of the work is to provide diagnostic ultrasound imaging studies for the healthcare team to use in the clinical diagnosis, therapeutic planning, and treatment of a wide variety of medical conditions and diseases. The quality and clarity of the studies directly affects the accuracy and reliability of the physician's diagnosis and treatment.
In addition to performing direct patient care, higher-level duties must be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. The Supervisory Medical Instrument Technologist is responsible for the coordination and performance of the US technologists in the Durham VAMC. Including general management of patient flow, quality of work, supply restock, and oversees the work assigned technologists and affiliated student technologists in radiology. The Medical Instrument Technologist monitors and makes work assignments, provides input on performance, resolves daily workplace issues and maintains efficient workflow. The position may include rotating shifts during evenings, nights, and holidays, working overtime as required for direct patient care.
The incumbent performs a variety of standard diagnostic ultrasound examinations using spectral wave Doppler, power Doppler and color flow imaging techniques that primarily include the areas of: small parts, abdomen, gynecologic (pelvic transabdominal and endovaginal), obstetric (emergent first trimester), breast, and vascular (aorta, deep vein thrombosis) in accordance with established practice guidelines as determined by demonstrated competency with each exam protocol under general supervision.
The incumbent assists the Radiologist in all aspects of performing Ultrasound-guided interventional procedures in accordance with standardized protocols that include but not limited to: biopsies, abscess drainages, cyst aspirations, etc. Ensures proper procedural set-up (room, supplies, accessory equipment), maintenance of sterile technique/field, and procedural Time Out requirements are met under general supervision.
The incumbent performs all, advanced level peripheral vascular exams using spectral wave Doppler, power Doppler and color flow imaging techniques that include but not limited to: Venous Insufficiency, Vein Mapping, Upper and Lower Extremity Arterial and Venous Duplex Exams, Carotid-artery Duplex and Hemodialysis Graft Evaluation studies by standardized protocols as determined by demonstrated competency with each exam protocol under general supervision.
Sonographers are required to maintain appropriate professional certification/credentials in areas of clinical practice to include continuous technical proficiency as related to the functions of this position. Must complete initial and annual competency assessment checklists. Active Basic Life Support certification is required in accordance with American Heart Association guidelines. Must also comply with other competency verification activities/requirements as assigned by Management.
Exercises independent judgement and critical thinking to recognize sonographic characteristics of normal and abnormal tissues, structures, and blood flow; adapts protocol as appropriate to further assess findings; adjusts scanning technique to optimize image quality and diagnostic information.
Assess pertinent patient data related to the diagnostic sonographic procedure to determine relevance to the examination. Evaluates contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and the patient's inability to or unwillingness to tolerate the exam and associated procedures.
Analyzes sonographic findings throughout the course of the examination so that a comprehensive study is completed with sufficient diagnostic data to include a preliminary evaluation/summary of findings such as areas of concern, suspected abnormalities, patient limitations, or sub-optimal visualization of region of interest is provided to the supervising Radiologist or Resident to render a final interpretation.
Ensures all ultrasound requisitions (orders) are appropriately processed (retrieved, screened, protocoled by Radiologist as needed) in a timely manner and submitted for follow-on scheduler action in accordance with VHA Radiology Scheduling Directive and departmental guidelines and procedures.
