The duties of this position assist with and contribute to the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients at the Madison VAMC and its CBOCs under the guidance of registered pharmacists and the direct supervision of the Lead Pharmacist or Supervisor. The incumbent is a highly specialized technician who serves as the controlled substance and research technician, responsible for the management of all controlled substances and investigational medications handled on an outpatient basis. The position functions with a high degree of autonomy with all activities subject to quality of service measurements.
- Manages outpatient inventory of controlled substances with procurement staff.
- Monitors expiration dates of all products.
- Serves as the primary pharmacy contact on all telephone inquiries.
- Promotes the enforcement of formulary and cost containment efforts of the facility.
- Advises patient on problem resolution and triages calls which require pharmacist or other
health care provider involvement.
- Assists with the ordering of refills and provider renewal requests.
- Is a initial pharmacy contact for patients requiring on-site prescriptions.
- Maintains responsibility for complex technical and automated support functions.
- Identifies potential opportunities to enhance patient care.
- Works closely with procurement staff to ensure adequate inventory levels of all controlled substance stock for outpatient dispensing.
- Interpret all investigational orders, assembles materials, prepares, packages, labels, completes required documentation, and sets up the finished prescriptions in an organized manner for check by pharmacist.
- Works closely with research coordinators and research inspectors.
- Monitors investigational medication inventories for supply adequacy and expirations.
- Demonstrates ability to operate, utilize, and care for all pharmacy equipment.
- Displays competence with good manufacturing practices and sterile technique through demonstration and/or actual work performance.
- Assists with special projects as requested by Chief of Pharmacy, Outpatient Supervisor, or staff pharmacists.
- Assists with scheduling/rescheduling issues.
- Attends and participates in technician and staff meetings.
- Maintains excellent working relationship with department and organization staff.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
