Alcorn to officially retire No. 9 jersey on Steve “Air II” McNair Day October 26, partners with McNair Family to host Celebrating the Legacy endowment gala.
In celebration of the legacy of NFL and college football legend, Steve “Air II” McNair, Alcorn State University and the Steve McNair Memorial Foundation has partnered to host several events on October 24-26, 2019. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Steve McNair setting the FCS total offensive yards record on October 23, 1994, versus Southern University.
During the NFL Tennessee Titans’ ceremony retiring McNair’s No. 9 jersey on Sunday, September 15, 2019, in Nashville, Alcorn President Felecia M. Nave presented a resolution proclaiming October 26, 2019, as Steve “Air II” McNair Day and announced the university’s plans to formally retire McNair’s No. 9 collegiate jersey during halftime of the Braves’ 2 p.m. football game versus Southern University.
The two organizations are also announcing the establishment of the Steve “Air II” and Mechelle McNair Endowment that will support academic and athletic endeavors for deserving students at Alcorn. The opening event of the weekend includes a fundraising gala to generate funds to support the aforementioned efforts of the endowment. Themed “Celebrating the Legacy”, the gala will be hosted by McNair’s Titans teammate and 1995 Heisman Trophy Winner, Eddie George. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2019, at The B.B. Club at 721 Clay Street, Vicksburg, Mississippi.
More information on events and the full schedule will be released later.
