Passport Drive at Howard University to Help Make International Travel More Accessible for Students (1989 hits)

Howard University joined forces with We Go Too and IES Abroad for Inaugural Passport Drive

Howard University’s Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center, We Go Too and IES Abroad successfully concluded their inaugural passport drive on November 18th, 2016 in Washington, DC. The passport drive assisted Howard University undergraduate and graduate students in obtaining a first time or renewed passport.

The event created a ‘one-stop shop’ for Howard students to complete the passport application process. Students were ushered into the lobby and their passport applications were reviewed by agents from the local passport agency. Adding to the convenience factor was a photographer on site taking complimentary passport photos to be added to the application. Three additional passport agents were on site to collect students’ documents, completing the process and answering any additional questions.

On the day nearly half of the students in attendance had their passport application fees waived. Howard University faculty and staff made donations to sponsor passport applications for the event’s first 15 registrants. In total, 35 new passport applications were submitted. Tonija Hope Navas, Deputy Director of the Ralph Bunche Center said, “We are on a mission to get more students of color to live and learn in another country. African-Americans participate on study abroad programs at a rate of only 5.6% of the total US student population studying abroad. If we do not gain the necessary global competence skills available on study abroad programs and required in the 21st century we will be left behind. This passport drive was another step in the right direction!” One of the first registrants, graduate student Gianna Judkins said, “I’ve always wanted to travel, but while trying to afford staying in school- purchasing my passport remained on the back burner as I couldn’t spare the funds [...]. You have no idea what your act of kindness means to me or the new doors of opportunity it has opened.”
