Students were told to run their race --- pursuing their college education -- with endurance as they began the new school year Monday. Concordia President, Rev.Dr. Tilahun Mendedo delivered the message at the opening convocation.
"You are in a race and your running begins today when you go to your first class." he said.
A native of Ethiopia, Dr. Mendedo told students that running was a way of life in his country. He ran 5 miles to school every day, often barefoot. It is important while running to not get distracted or discouraged, he emphasized.
When troubles come, Mendedo said, keep your focus and don't give up. Look up and see Jesus, and he will "lead you, guide you along the way."
The opening service was attended by faculty, staff, students and guests from the city of Selma and pastors from Lutheran churches in Alabama and Mississippi. Four new faculty members were installed by Rev. Kurtis Schultz, President of the Southern District, Lutheran Church Missouri Synod: Dr. Kyra Sparks, Dr. William Formby, Miss Courtney Washington and Mr. Alemu Katiso.
Music was provided by the Concordia Band, directed by Mr. Steven Johnson and the Concordia Choir, led by Mrs. Minnie McMillan.
